The latest Star Wars Unlimited Planetary Qualifier event in Queensland happened over the weekend, and despite the long day, competitive events only seem to get better here at Vault Games. So let’s run through what happened, who won, and how the day played out.

The Main Event

It's now the third Planetary Qualifiers here in Queensland, and the second for us here at Vault Games, so things were ready to go for open at 9.00am with a smooth and easy check in before the main event kicked off at 10. With a grand total of 40 players for the main event, the general rounds were limited to six rounds before a top-8 cut to determine the latest Planetary Qualifiers champion for Queensland.

The meta has been cracked wide open with 25 different leaders represented across the 40 decks, and a total of 30 different base and leader combinations. The Top 8 not only represented eight different base and leader combinations, but eight different leaders entirely! It was clear that Mother Talzin (LOF#002) was a favourite moving into this contest after the recent Galactic Championships victory, with all four showings matching the world champion's makeup, but it wasn't the nightsisters that made the Top 8.

At the end of the six swiss rounds, the Top 8 was declared with the following players:

  • Cayliss H. (Kylo Ren, Rash and Deadly + Tarkintown)
  • Chris A. (Darth Vader, Victor Squadron Leader + Jabba's Palace)
  • Fletcher C. (Kazuda Xiono, Best Pilot in the Galaxy + Tarkintown)
  • Fred H. (Emperor Palpatine, Galactic Rule + Jabba's Palace)
  • Jacob M. (Kit Fisto, Focused Jedi Master + Starlight Temple)
  • Jason D.M. (Quinlan Vos, Sticking the Landing + Tarkintown)
  • Nick S. (Grand Admiral Thrawn, ...How Unfortunate + Coronet City)
  • Rachel G. (Captain Rex, Fighting For His Brothers + Droid Manufactory)

Yes, there are some wild decks in the top cut. In fact, here's two from Vault's own regular community that surprised us...

After two rounds, the Grand Final came down to Brisbane's premier Thrawn pilot, Nick S. (runner up at the last Brisbane PQ), and winner of the Twilight of the Republic qualifier Jason D.M. The force was not with Nick this time and Jason was able to knock out Nick's strong control pieces and whittle away Nick's base with back-to-back game wins to claim the champion prize.

Below are Jason’s Quinlan Tarkintown Champion Decklist, and Nick's Thrawn Yellow Runner-Up Decklist.

The Side Events

Just like the last event, there was a three-set draft after the dinner break to enjoy the Force synergies between Twilight of the Republic and Legends of the Force, while Jump to Lightspeed offered a way to beef up the vehicles across all packs.

The Trilogy Draft wasn't the only thing happening. We also had our friend Lachie A running some Podracing where you could win extra prize tickets by selecting a possible winner of the race. A massive congrats to Lin who took 4x his original blind bet of 3 tickets on Anakin Skywalker, walking away with 12 prize tickets to spend on the prize wall.

The Team

Once again, a massive thank you to the team involved with the Weekend; Piper as head judge and Tim as Floor judge, as well as Lachie taking the time out of his day to run a few podraces, and Zach for manning the feature-table stream. Also a big thank you to the folks upstairs at Little Laneway, who provided the space to run this awesome event!

Our Assessment Overall

Just like last time, this event was amazingly fun and could easily be classified as a success from our perspective. The test of a Prize Wall system over straight booster-prizes was well-received, with many choosing to use their tickets towards deck boxes, carbonite boosters, playmats, and other accessories, rather than just taking some boosters from the latest set, so we will look at rolling out a similar system to future major events we are involved in.

There was also a full feature-table stream running all day, allowing you to tune in to the games during the day. You can catch the VOD here. Moving forward, we'll need to weigh the costs of having someone manning that all day so be sure to watch when we are live as that goes a long way towards justifying its continued use.

I'm not sure what else we would change about the event. We got locked into a date with the venue so, hopefully, the next event will give us some flexibility on how long we have to run it (and promote it to, considering FFG had us under embargo until 16 July). That's a discussion we'll have with the OP guys for next time though. Otherwise, all round, a great event that you'll likely see more of from us here at Vault Games.
