Welcome to the next installment of our painting guide series for Star Wars: Legion, where myself, the Vault Minis-Man, will step you through how to paint the figures in your box. Next up, we have the core units of the Rebellion, the Rebel Trooper.
To begin, you will need the following:
- Citadel Painting Handle
- Corax White Spray
- Mechanicus Standard Grey
- Rhinox Hide
- Steel Legion Drab
- Screaming Skull
- Skrag Brown
- Longbeard Grey
- Cadian Fleshtone
- Wazdakka Red
- Macragge Blue
- Temple Guard Blue
- Nuln Oil
- Reikland Fleshshade
- Agrax Earthshade
- Drakenhof Nightshade
- Citadel Sand
- Some PVA Glue
- Your Paint Brushes
To start with, undercoat your models with the Corax White Spray.
Next, we're going to lay down all of the base colours for the model's clothing. This means we paint shirt and the top of the hat with Screaming Skull; the helmet, jacket, boots and gloves with Rhinox Hide; and the pants and bandoleer with Steel Legion Drab.
Now, we're going to cheat the highlights onto the model. This is a little trick I learnt painting Trollblood models for Hordes. Using the Longbeard Grey, lightly drybrush the base-coated area, ensuring you get a light highlight to the raised areas on the model.
Next, shade the entirety of the browns with a heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade. This will not only darken the recesses of your model, but should lightly tone the drybrush as well.
Once the brown shading has dried, go over the higher regions of the pants and shirt once again with Steel Legion Drab and Screaming Skull, respectively. Make sure you leave the darkened areas dark so that your model retains its depth.
Next, for the weapon, just like we did previously with the Stormtroopers, base the weapon and equipment with Mechanicus Standard Grey and, once dry, wash it twice with Nuln Oil.
Now, paint any exposed skin with the Cadian Fleshtone. Once dried use the Reikland Fleshshade to shade the skin areas Note: For painting the Duros trooper, you'll need to use a different technique.
Start with a Macragge Blue base. From there, paint a layer of Temple Guard Blue to give it vibrancy. Once dry, drybrush on a light layer of Longbeard Grey, and then follow up with a heavy shade of Drakenhof Nightshade. Use Wazdakka Red for the eyes.
Next, we have the base to do. Again, just like the Stormtroopers, paint the top of the base with Steel Legion Drab but this time, paint the edge Wazdakka Red to match the Rebel red of the original base. This may take two or three layers to be even.
Finally, brush on some PVA glue on the top of the base and dip it into the Citadel Sand. Shake off any excess and tap the model a few times on the edge of the container to be sure.
And that's it. Now your Rebel Troopers are ready to go. By using these techniques and colours, you should be able to roll out your schemes to the rest of your models. And, if you ever want to learn how to paint in person, you can always come along to one of our Sunday Painting Classes.
